Tyrannosaurus rex, commonly known as T. rex, was a large carnivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period about 68 to 66 million years ago. It was one of the largest land predators ever to have lived, reaching lengths of up to 40 feet (12 meters) and standing up to 20 feet (6 meters) tall.
T. rex had a large skull with powerful jaws that contained big, sharp serrated teeth that it used to crush and tear through its prey's flesh. It had a small two-fingered forelimbs and thick, muscular hind legs that allowed it to run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour).
Despite its fearsome reputation, recent research suggests that T. rex may not have been the most powerful predator in its environment. Other large carnivorous dinosaurs, such as Albertosaurus and Gorgosaurus, may have had more powerful jaw muscles and been able to bite harder than T. rex.
